LOOKALIKE AUDIENCE

An audience built from your existing customers' shared traits.

Feed your closed-customer list to Meta or Google and they find more of them. Only as good as the source list.

A Lookalike Audience is a targeting method that finds new prospects similar to your existing customers. For contractors, feed in your highest-value customers—repeat clients, large commercial jobs, or those who left top reviews—and build lookalikes to expand reach. Quality of the seed list matters more than size; ten thousand low-value emails will produce worse lookalikes than a few thousand high-LTV customers. Use separate lookalikes for different service lines—residential roofing lookalikes may differ from commercial epoxy. Expect initial performance to lag behind direct-seed targeting and refine by layering behaviors like recent property purchases or renovation intent. Test 1% and 2–5% similarity bands: 1% is more precise, 5% is broader and cheaper. Monitor conversion quality after scaling—some lookalikes can bring high volume but lower average order values. Combine lookalikes with geographic limits (service radius) to avoid out-of-area traffic. Finally, use high-intent creatives and lead magnets to convert lookalike traffic into qualified leads quickly; don’t assume they’ll behave like your past clients without guidance.

In practice
  • A roofing company uploads its top 1,000 repeat customers to build a 1% lookalike and finds new high-value leads in neighboring suburbs.
  • An HVAC business creates separate lookalikes from maintenance-plan customers to find prospects likely to purchase service contracts.
  • An epoxy firm uses commercial client emails to build a lookalike and targets B2B properties for larger contracts.
Common mistake

Using your entire customer list indiscriminately; the mistake is creating lookalikes from unsegmented data which dilutes the seed and produces worse targeting.
