UTM PARAMETERS

URL tags that tell analytics where a click came from.

Pass through to the form so the CRM stores source, medium, and campaign on every lead. The cleanest free attribution available.

UTM Parameters are the URL tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term) that tell analytics where traffic came from. For service businesses that run multi-channel ads, UTMs are essential to match click data to CRM leads and to compare campaign performance fairly. Use consistent naming conventions (lowercase, hyphens, no spaces), and document them in a shared spreadsheet. Tag every landing page link in ads, emails, and social posts. Without UTMs, analytics will bucket traffic incorrectly, leading to bad budget decisions. Importantly, UTMs should be combined with call-tracking and CRM tagging; a UTM click that later becomes a phone call is only valuable if the UTM is captured during the session or via the landing page script. Track and map UTMs to your CRM fields during form submission so you can run true ROAS and CPA by campaign. Avoid dynamic, inconsistent naming — it creates fragmentation and false campaigns. Keep the structure simple: source, medium, and campaign usually suffice. Use utm_content for creative splits and utm_term for identified keywords when necessary.

In practice
  • A roofing campaign uses utm_campaign=storm_2026 and utm_source=facebook to trace which creatives drove estimates.
  • An HVAC email newsletter includes UTMs for each CTA so the team can see which email led to booked calls.
  • An epoxy campaign tags paid search clicks with utm_term to evaluate keyword-level performance.
Common mistake

Inconsistent UTM naming across campaigns; the common error is creating similar but slightly different tags that fragment reporting and make results unreliable.
